NHL: Carolina 3, Florida 2 (OT)

SUNRISE, Fla., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- An overtime goal by Justin Williams carried the Carolina Hurricanes past the Florida Panthers 3-2 Tuesday night.

Williams scored on a power play 1:47 into overtime after Florida's Mike Van Ryn had been called for holding 17 seconds earlier.

The Panthers, playing the 1,000th game in the history of the franchise, scored both of their goals in the third period to send the game into overtime following a dismal first period in which they had only four shots on goal.

Erik Cole had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes while Scott Walker notched a goal.

Olli Jokinen scored his seventh goal in seven games for host Florida while Nathan Horton tallied the other.
