NHL: Washington 3, N.Y. Rangers 1

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Olaf Kolzig came within 1:51 seconds of his first shutout of the season Saturday night as Washington beat the New York Rangers, 3-1.

Boyd Gordon scored unassisted in the first period. Alexander Ovechkin and Matt Pettinger added goals and Kolzig made 41 saves on 42 shots for the Capitals, who have won four of their last six games.

Michael Nylander scored on the power play at 18:09 of the third period on assists by Brendan Shanahan and Adam Hall to prevent a shutout for the Rangers, whose four-game winning streak was broken.

Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist allowed three goals on 28 shots.

The Rangers beat Washington, 5-2, Oct. 5 in the season opener for both teams.
