NHL: Buffalo 9, Philadelphia 1

BUFFALO, N.Y., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Maxim Afinogenov had a goal and a career-high four assists Tuesday while leading the Buffalo Sabres to a 9-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Thomas Vanek added two goals and two assists and Chris Drury scored his seventh goal of the season for Buffalo, which had six goals in the second period.

Ryan Miller made 37 saves for the Sabres, who have won their first six games and are seeking to surpass the team record for consecutive wins to start a season, which was eight in 1975-76.

Derek Roy also scored twice for the Sabres, who defeated the Flyers in six games in the first round of last season's playoffs.

Robert Esche made his second start of the season as goalkeeper for Philadelphia and allowed nine goals on 37 shots. Jeff Carter scored the lone goal for the Flyers, who have just one this season.
