NHL: Atlanta 4, Washington 3 (OT)

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Ilya Kovalchuk's first goal of the season came 3:02 into overtime Saturday night and gave the Atlanta Thrashers a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals.

Kovalchuk darted up the ice before whipping a shot past Olie Kolzig's glove to give his squad a road win, Atlanta's second in as many road games.

Scott Mellanby added a pair of goals for the Thrashers, who have won four of their last five games. Kari Lehtonen stopped 35-of-38 shots faced in the win.

Jamie Heward and Dainius Zubrus each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who have lost three of four. Kolzig made 27 stops in defeat.
