NHL: Buffalo 5, Montreal 4 (SO)

BUFFALO, N.Y., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Maxim Afinogenov scored the game-winning goal in the shootout as Buffalo beat Montreal, 5-4, Friday night.

Earlier, Afinogenov scored a goal to tie the game with 15 seconds left in regulation. Daniel Briere, Jiri Novotny and Jason Pominville also scored for Buffalo. Goaltender Ryan Miller made 23 saves.

Saku Koivu scored two goals and had one assist, and Cristobal Huet made 33 saves for the Canadiens.

Buffalo's went 0-for-5 on the power play and has failed to score on 14 power-play opportunities this season. Montreal was 2-for-5 on the power play.
