Davenport said after the match that the shoulder had bothered her Friday in the semifinals and worsened Saturday as the match continued. She said she would try to be ready for the U.S. Open, which starts Monday in New York.

The second-seeded Henin-Hardenne earned her fifth title of 2006 and her first in this tournament.

She could be the favorite in the U.S. Open, having already reached the final at the first three Grand Slam events of the year.

Henin-Hardenne won the French Open crown and lost in the Australian Open and Wimbledon finales. All three title matches were against Amelie Mauresmo, who lost to Davenport in the quarterfinals of this event.
