Mike Weir leads the Buick Championship

GRAND BLANC, Mich., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Mike Weir has a one-shot lead over Vijay Singh after shooting a 9-under 63 in the rain-shortened first round of the Buick Championship in Grand Blanc, Mich.

Singh, a two-time defending champion, birdied four straight holes -- 13-16 -- to end up in second place at 8-under 64.

"I just played well today, and made some nice putts to get it going," Singh said. "Momentum is good, plus (the greens are) pretty soft so you can go for the flags."

Joe Durant, Woody Austin and Brett Quigley share third place at 7-under 65.

Lucas Glover, Robert Allenby and Vaughn Taylor share eighth place at 5-under 67.

Kris Cox, Steve Lowery, David McKenzie, Sean O'Hair and Scott Verplank are one stroke further back at 4-under 68.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods, the 2002 champion, shot 6-under 66, and shares sixth place with Arron Oberholser.
