LONDON, June 27 (UPI) -- Former world No. 1s Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Martina Hingis were all opening-round winners Tuesday at Wimbledon.
Second-seeded Clijsters finished her rain-suspended match from Monday by beating Russian Vera Zvonareva 7-5, 6-3. The reigning U.S. Open champion, Clijsters has reached the final at every Grand Slam event except for Wimbledon, where she was a semifinalist three years ago.
Third-seeded Henin-Hardenne beat Chinese Meng Yuan 6-0, 6-1 to run her current winning streak to 12 matches. She's won her last two tournaments, including a second straight and third overall French Open championship earlier this month.
Henin-Hardenne, 24, needs Wimbledon to complete a career Golden Slam. The Belgian star has won every major, except for this one, and claimed an Olympic gold medal in 2004.
Hingis defeated Ukrainian Olga Savchuk 6-2, 6-2 in her first singles match here since 2001. The five-time Grand Slam champ and former world No. 1 star captured Wimbledon back in 1997.
