Ogilvy wins the U.S. Open Golf Tournament

MAMARONECK, N.Y., June 18 (UPI) -- Geoff Ogilvy made par on the final four holes Sunday on the way to a one-shot victory at the U.S. Open Golf Tournament at Mamaroneck, N.Y.

Ogilvy (72) won the event after veterans Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie faltered down the stretch.

Ogilvy's winning score was five-over-par 285 on the difficult Winged Foot golf course.

Mickelson (74), Montgomerie (71) and Jim Furyk (70) all closed at 6-over 286.

Mickelson, who was trying to win his third straight major golf tournament, had a chance to force a playoff, but made double bogey at No. 18. He hit just 2-of-14 fairways during the closing 18 holes.

Ogilvy is the third Australian to win a major in this country. David Graham also won the U.S. Open in 1981, and Steve Elkington won the PGA Championship in 1995.
