"I already felt much more comfortable going into this match today," Federer said. "I felt very calm when I was warming up. I think that's just by being here for so long now, playing some good matches early on. I feel like I'm really into the tournament."

On a day when several big names suffered losses, eighth-seeded James Blake was added to the list after a 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-1), 5-7, 6-4, loss to No. 25 Gael Monfils of France in a match suspended by darkness on Saturday.

Blake was the last American in the men's draw.

Also losing Sunday were women's top-seed Amelie Mauresmo and fourth-seed Maria Sharapova.
