Cubs get Nevin from Rangers for Hairston

CHICAGO, May 31 (UPI) -- Infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. of the Chicago Cubs Wednesday was traded to Texas for fellow infielder Phil Nevin.

The deal may help the Cubs in the power department long after slugger Derek Lee suffered a fractured right wrist against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 20.

Nevin, 35, hit .216 with nine home runs and 31 RBI in 46 games, primarily as a designated hitter, with the Rangers this season. He has a .271 career batting average with 195 homers and 706 RBI in 1,134 career games.

Hairston, who can also play the outfield, was acquired before the start of the 2005 season in a trade that sent Sammy Sosa to Baltimore.

He is a lifetime .259 hitter with 30 home runs and 194 RBI.
