Mike Brown gets contract extension

CLEVELAND, May 25 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday extended the contract of Coach Mike Brown to a fourth year.

This season, Brown guided one of the NBA's youngest teams to the Eastern Conference semifinals, where it was beaten by Detroit in seven games.

"We firmly believe the Cavs have the right person on the bench as we build towards the future," General Manager Danny Ferry said. "This decision is reflective of the trust and mutual commitment within our team as we work together in bringing Cleveland sustained success and the NBA Championship."

Brown, 36, who is the NBA's second-youngest head coach, signed a three-year, $10 million deal when he was hired last June. He will be under contract through the 2008-09 season.

Before coming to Cleveland, Brown was an assistant with Indiana for two seasons and San Antonio and Washington for three seasons each.

He guided the Cavaliers to 50 wins and their first post-season appearance since 1998.
