MLB: N.Y. Mets 9, Philadelphia 8 (16)

FLUSHING, N.Y., May 24 (UPI) -- Carlos Beltran led off the home half of the 16th inning with a home run, giving the New York Mets a 9-8 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Beltran's homer, his 12th of the year, was one of four home runs for the Mets in the game that took 5 hours, 22 minutes to complete and finished up early Wednesday. Philadelphia, which got a home run and five RBI from David Bell, lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Darren Oliver (2-0), the eighth pitcher the Mets used in the game, collected the victory. Ryan Madison (4-3) pitched a strong seven innings in relief but gave up Beltran's homer to take the loss.

The Mets were down 8-5 two outs into the eighth inning when Endy Chavez reached on an infield hit. Chris Woodward delivered a pinch-hit double that scored Chavez and Jose Reyes followed with a shot over the right-field wall to tie the score 8-8.

Bell had a 3-run home run in the fifth inning, putting the Phillies up 6-2, but the Mets whittled away at the deficit, getting within 6-5 in the sixth only to have Philadelphia score twice in the seventh with Bell's hitting a 2-run double.
