Americans beat Latvia to advance at Worlds

RIGA, Latvia, May 13 (UPI) -- Patrick O'Sullivan's third-period goal Saturday put the United States in the quarterfinals at the 2006 World Hockey Championships with a 4-2 win over Latvia.

After Aleksandrs Semjonovs tied the game just one minute into the third, O'Sullivan, who was added to the roster Friday, scored the game-winner 2:37 into the period.

Ryan Suter scored another power-play goal just over seven minutes later as the United States held on for the victory. Craig Anderson made 22 saves, while Ryan Malone and Dustin Brown also scored.

Sergejs Naumovs made 24 saves and Lauris Darzins scored for Latvia, which was officially eliminated from quarterfinal contention.

In group F, Belarus eliminated Ukraine from quarterfinal play, 9-1. Montreal Canadiens' prospect Mikhail Grabovsky scored a hat-trick while Andrei Skabelka had a goal and four assists, and Andrei Mezin stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced.
