GREEN BAY, Wis., April 26 (UPI) -- Green Bay Packers starting quarterback Brett Favre will return for a 15th season, the team announced Wednesday to end months of speculation.
Favre informed the team Tuesday that he would play this season and not retire.
"The Green Bay Packers are very pleased that Brett has come to this decision, and look forward to a successful 2006 season," Ted Thompson, the team's executive vice president and general manager, said in a statement.
Favre looks to extend his NFL quarterback record of 221 consecutive regular-season starts and break Dan Marino's NFL record 420 touchdown passes. Favre needs 25 to surpass Marino's career mark.
While Favre recently criticized Thompson for not doing enough to improve the Packers, he also said he still loves the game.
"As time has passed, I have forgotten a little bit about the 4-12 season and think more about the good times," Favre told the Milwaukee Sentinel before making his decision. "If I decide to come back and play, that's really what I'm deciding to come back to, the fun of (it)."
