CHARLESTON, S.C., April 13 (UPI) -- Reigning champion Justine Henin-Hardenne and second-seeded Nadia Petrova Thursday were third-round winners at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C.
Henin-Hardenne, who is the third seed in this year's tournament, beat Karolina Sprem of Croatia, 6-4, 6-4. Sprem made 34 unforced errors as Henin-Hardenne improved to 13-0 lifetime in the tournament.
Petrova ousted Lucie Safarova of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-3. She needed only 19 minutes to win the first set.
No. 3 Patty Schnyder of Switzerland beat No. 16 Mara Santangelo of Italy, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. Seventh-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany beat Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. And No. 8 Nathalie Dechy of France topped 11th-seeded Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia, 6-2, 6-3.
