Petrova advances at Amelia Island

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla., April 6 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia Thursday easily beat American Meghann Shaughnessy, 6-1, 6-3, in the $600,000 Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island, Fla.

Petrova will next face Spanish qualifier Virginia Ruano Pascual in the quarterfinals. Pascual held off Elena Vesnina of Russia, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

2nd-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland beat Vera Dushevina, also from Russia, 6-3, 7-5, to set up a Friday match with world No. 10 Kuznetsova.

Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova won her seventh-straight match with a straight-sets, third-round victory, 6-3, 6-4, over 11th-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain.
