Mauresmo, Hingis advance at Qatar

DOHA, Qatar, March 2 (UPI) -- Amelie Mauresmo and Martina Hingis face each other in Friday's semifinals at the Qatar Total Open tennis tournament at Doha.

In Thursday's quarterfinals, Mauresmo, who ranks second in the latest world rankings, trounced Roberta Vinci of Italy, 6-4, 6-0. Hingis topped No. 6 Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, the 2004 Doha runner-up, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.

With her victory, Mauresmo, who won the Australian Open in January, rose to 18-2 overall so far this season. Hingis, who won this event in 2001, increased her 2006 record to 16-5 since re-joining the WTA Tour in January.

Mauresmo has won her last two meetings against Hingis.

In other matches Thursday, No. 2 seed Nadia Petrova beat Na Li of China, 6-4, 6-4; and Ai Sugiyama of Japan eliminated Julia Schruff of Germany, 6-3, 6-2. Petrova and Sugiyama meet in Friday's other semifinal.
