NHL: Carolina 8, Montreal 2

MONTREAL, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Erik Cole had his third career hat trick and Eric Staal added two goals and an assist Tuesday as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Montreal Canadiens, 8-2.

Kevyn Adams, Craig Adams and Niklas Nordgren also scored goals and Martin Gerber made 32 saves for the Hurricanes, who have won 14 of their last 15 games.


Steve Begin and Richard Zednik each scored a goal for Montreal. Cristobal Huet stopped 13 shots in relief of Jose Theodore, who was pulled in the second period.

Theodore gave up five goals on just 10 shots for the Canadiens, who have lost two of their last three games.
