NHL: Philadelphia 1, Boston 0

BOSTON, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Rookie goaltender Antero Niittymaki made 27 saves Monday to post his second career shutout as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Boston Bruins, 1-0.

Fellow rookie Jeff Carter scored the lone goal of the game for the Flyers, who have won six of their last seven games. Another pair of rookies, R.J. Umberger and Ben Eager, got the goal's assists.

Niittymaki's first career shutout was Dec. 6 against Calgary. He stopped 10 third-period shots by Boston.

Hannu Toivonen allowed just the one goal on 21 shots faced for the Bruins, who lost for the third time in their last five games.
