China athlete abuse to be investigated

BEIJING, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The head of the International Olympic Committee is calling for an investigation into athlete abuse in China but has warned against overreacting.

Jacques Rogge was reacting to allegations that China's coaches physically abuse young gymnasts, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

In calling for an investigation, Rogge said he doesn't agree with physical abuse. He played down any problems associated with physical punishment in training young athletes.

China is host of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
