Jeff Gordon wins at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Jeff Gordon won the Subway 500 Nextel Cup race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

He made a late-race strategy decision to stay on the track during a caution and his No. 24 Dupont Chevrolet took the checkered flag 0.236 seconds ahead of runner-up Tony Stewart.

The victory was Gordon's fourth of the season and 73rd of his career.

Stewart's second-place finish, along with bonus points, gave him a 15-point lead over Jimmy Johnson after six events in the chase for the Nextel Cup. The points score is 5,957-5,942.

Bobby Labonte, Jeff Burton, Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray, Kenny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Ryan Newman rounded out the top 10 finishers.

Race seven of the 10-race "Chase for the Nextel Cup" on the NASCAR circuit is set for Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
