Dontrelle Willis earns Spahn Award

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Dontrelle Willis of the Florida Marlins Wednesday was named the recipient of the Warren Spahn Award as baseball's top left-hander in 2005.

Willis, 23, went 22-10, hurling 236 1/3 innings. He had 55 walks and 170 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.63. Under a scoring system compiled yearly by the Oklahoma Sports Museum in Guthrie, Okla., Willis edged Houston's Andy Pettitte by one point.

The system uses the number of wins, the strikeout total and ERA.

Willis was first in wins, second in ERA and fifth in strikeouts among the left-handers who qualified, for a total of eight points.

Others receiving votes were Minnesota's Johan Santana (10 points), Randy Johnson of the New York Yankees (12 points), Milwaukee's Chris Capuano, Cliff Lee of Cleveland, Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox, Mark Mulder of St. Louis, Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia and David Wells of Boston.

Spahn is in the Hall of Fame.
