NHL: Toronto 9, Atlanta 1

ATLANTA, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Jeff O'Neill scored three goals Friday night to help the Toronto Maple Leafs rip Atlanta, 9-1.

Jason Allison, Kyle Wellwood, Eric Lindros, Alexander Steen, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Darcy Tucker each added a goal. Bryan McCabe had four assists, Allison had three, Tucker added two and Ed Belfour stopped 18 shots as Toronto, which scored five goals in the third period, improved to 2-1-2.

Atlanta (2-3) went 0-for-7 on the power play while the Maple Leafs were 8-for-19 and out-shot the Flames, 34-20.

Atlanta (2-3), which had successive routs over Washington in two games last weekend by scores of 7-3 and 8-1, has cooled off considerably in its last three outings, scoring just one goal overall.

Marc Savard tallied Atlanta's only goal in the third period and goaltender Michael Garnett had 16 saves.
