NHL: N.Y. Islanders 3, Carolina 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Shawn Bates tallied the game-winning goal midway through the third period Saturday night as the New York Islanders beat Carolina, 3-2.

Goaltender Rick DiPietro made 42 saves and both Miroslav Satan and Jason Blake had goals for the Islanders (1-1), who improved to 21-10-1-1 in home openers.

Eric Staal had two goals, Oleg Tverdovsky added two assists, and Cam Ward had 32 saves for the Hurricanes (1-2), who were 0-for-5 on the power play.

Carolina out-shot the Islanders, 44-35.
