ST. LOUIS, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Reggie Sanders had a grand slam homer and a post-season record six RBI Tuesday to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-5 win over the San Diego Padres.
Chris Carpenter (1-0) scattered three hits, struck out three and walked three in Game 1 of the best-of-five National League Division Series. Carpenter, a 30-year-old righthander, left the game as a precaution with cramps in his hand. He was 21-5 with a 2.83 ERA this season.
Jim Edmonds was 3-for-4 with a home run for the NL Central champion Cardinals, who lost to Boston in last year's World Series.
Game 2 is Thursday in St. Louis.
Eric Young homered and had two RBI for San Diego. The NL West champion Padres entered the postseason tied with the 1973 New York Mets (82-79) for the fewest wins by a playoff team in major league history.
