Eagles promote kicker Todd France

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Eagles Friday signed place-kicker Todd France off their practice squad.

He will take over kicking duties in Sunday's game at Kansas City, filling in for three-time Pro Bowl choice David Akers, who is out indefinitely with a torn right hamstring. France was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 20.

Akers was hurt in last Sunday's victory over Oakland.

"He's got plenty of leg strength," special teams coordinator John Harbaugh said about France on the team's Web site.

Akers suffered the tear on the opening kickoff against the Raiders. He was able to boot a 23-yard field goal in the final seconds to give the Eagles a 23-20 win.

Wide receiver Darnerian McCants, who made one reception for 22 yards in three games, was released to make room on the active roster. McCants was signed by the Eagles shortly before the season began after being cut by Washington.
