MLB: Chi. White Sox 4, Detroit 2

CHICAGO, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Carl Everett tripled in two runs and Paul Konerko added his 40th home run Thursday as the Chicago White Sox beat Detroit, 4-2 to make the AL playoffs.

Konerko joined Frank Thomas (1995-96) as the only players in White Sox history to hit 40 homers in back-to-back seasons. Everett had three hits and Scott Podsednik added one hit and one RBI for the White Sox, who clinched the American League Central Division title and are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2000.

They haven't captured a post-season series since winning the 1917 World Series.

The White Sox have won five of seven. Winner Freddy Garcia rose to 14-8. Bobby Jenks earned his fourth save.

Brandon Inge had four hits and Magglio Ordonez added an RBI for the Tigers, who left nine men on base. Detroit is 4-9 in its last 13 contests. Losing pitcher Jason Grilli dropped to 1-1.
