France, Russia to decide Fed Cup title

PARIS, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The 2005 Fed Cup champion will be decided this weekend when France hosts defending champion Russia at the home of the French Open.

The Russians captured their first-ever Fed Cup title by beating the French 3-2 in last year's finale in Moscow.

The best-of-five competition will begin Saturday with a pair of singles rubbers. The first pits U.S. and French Open runner-up Mary Pierce against Russia's Elena Dementieva.

The two met in the U.S. Open semifinal a week ago. Pierce won that match in three sets.

The second match has France's Amelie Mauresmo against 2004 French Open titlist Anastasia Myskina.

The 2005 Fed Cup champ will be decided Sunday, when the reverse singles and potentially-deciding doubles rubber will be staged. The first singles match will pit Mauresmo against Dementieva, while the second calls for Pierce to battle Myskina.
