ST. LOUIS, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Albert Pujols hit two solo home runs Thursday night as St. Louis beat the New York Mets, 5-0.

John Gall added a two-run homer for the Cardinals in the seventh inning and winning pitcher Chris Carpenter hurled seven scoreless innings to become baseball's first 21-game winner, rising to 21-4 overall. He gave up just three hits, walked only one and struck out seven.

Carlos Beltran went 2-for-4 for the Mets, who have dropped eight of nine.

Losing pitcher Kris Benson fell to 9-7 with his fourth straight setback.
