Woods takes early British Open lead

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, July 14 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods carded a six-under-par 66 to grab the early lead during the first round of the British Open at the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland Thursday.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, who squandered a three-shot lead during the final round of last month's U.S. Open, shot a four-under 68. He is tied for second place with Luke Donald, amateur Eric Ramsay, Chris Riley, Scott Verplank, Tino Schuster, two-time Masters winner Jose Maria Olazabal and Peter Lonard.

Defending champion Todd Hamilton managed a two-over-par 74 in the first round.

Jack Nicklaus, a three-time British Open champion shot a three-over-par 75 in the first round. Nicklaus has announced this will be his last week of competitive golf.
