ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, July 13 (UPI) -- Masters champion Tiger Woods headlines a field of big-name players Thursday at the start of the 133rd British Open golf tournament at St. Andrews, Scotland.
Woods, looking for this 10th victory in a major tournament, is the odds-on favorite to win. He was a winner by eight strokes at St. Andrews in 2000.
Also in the field are Jim Furyk, who won the Western Open two weeks ago, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, 2004 British champion Todd Hamilton, Thomas Bjorn, Retief Goosen, and U.S. Open winner Michael Campbell.
It will be the last major tournament for Jack Nicklaus, who has decided to quit competing in majors after St. Andrews because he feels he is no longer competitive. He has won 18 majors in his career.
The winner will earn a check of nearly $1.4 million from a total purse of almost $7.5 million.
