Daniilidou beat Henin-Hardenne 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, 7-5 to end her 24-match winning streak.

This was the first time in the Open Era that the reigning French Open champion lost in the first round at Wimbledon. A former world No. 1, Henin-Hardenne played her first grass-court match since losing to Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals in 2003.

Sharapova, 18-year-old Russian, beat Spaniard Nuria Llagostera Vives 6-2, 6-2. Sharapova beat Serena Williams in last year's Wimbledon final.

Serena, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, beat fellow American Angela Haynes a 6-7 (12-14), 6-4, 6-2.
