Quantrill, Torre suspended

NEW YORK, May 31 (UPI) -- New York Yankees pitcher Paul Quantrill and Manager Joe Torre were both suspended Tuesday as a result of a bean ball incident last week.

Quantrill was pitching against Detroit on May 24 when teammate Alex Rodriguez was hit by a pitch after slamming two homers.

Quantrill then threw behind Detroit's Jason Smith, after which both benches were warned that any further incident would result in ejection.

On the very next pitch, Quantrill hit Smith. Quantrill and Torre were ejected.

Quantrill was suspended for three games and Torre for one.
