Germany beats Argentina, wins WTC final

DUSSELDORF, Germany, May 21 (UPI) -- Germany sewed up its fourth ATP World Team Championship Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Argentina.

The doubles team of Tommy Haas and Alexander Waske got the winning point in the doubles by beating Guillermo Canas and Guillermo Coria, 6-1, 6-2.

Coria's 6-1, 6-1 victory over Florian Mayer gave Argentina a 1-0 lead, but Haas tied it with a 6-4, 6-3 win against French Open champion Gaston Gaudio.

It was Germany's first title in seven years. The Germans were also winners in 1989, 1994 and 1998. Argentina was attempting to win its third title, having won in 1980 and 2002.

In the Round Robin, Germany had wins over the United States, Sweden and Spain, while Argentina beat the Czech Republic, France, and two-time defending champion Chile.
