Sunsa coach wins NBA honor

PHOENIX, May 10 (UPI) -- Phoenix Suns Coach Mike D'Antoni was named Tuesday as the NBA's Coach of the Year.

Sunday, Suns point guard Steve Nash was named the NBA's MVP.

Under D'Antoni, the Suns won 33 more games this past season han they did the previous season. Phoenix went from 29 wins the year before to the NBA's best 62-20 this season.

D'Antoni had 41 first-place votes and a total of 326 points. Indiana's Rick Carlisle was second with 26 first-place votes for 241 points.

D'Antoni has been the head coach of the Suns since Dec. 10, 2003, when he took over for Frank Johnson following an 8-13 start. Phoenix was 21-40 under D'Antoni to end the 2003-04 season and the club signed him to a two-year contract extension last May 12.
