HAMPTON, Ga., March 18 (UPI) -- Ryan Newman won his fifth straight pole at the Atlanta Motor Speedway Friday night and will start in front for Sunday's Nextel Cup race.

He turned in a time of 28.476 seconds around the 1.54-mile circuit for a speed of 194.690 miles per hour.

It was Newman's second pole in four events this season and the 29th of his career. This is his 120th Nextel Cup event.

"Five in a row is pretty amazing," Newman said. "A lot of effort went into this and we're just looking forward to the race."

Bobby Hamilton, who finished 11th last week in Las Vegas, will start on the front row with Newman while Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards will make up the second row.

Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Joe Nemechek, Brian Vickers, Tony Stewart and Jason Leffler made up the remainder of the top 10.
