Congress to probe steroid use in baseball

WASHINGTON, March 9 (UPI) -- A U.S. House of Representatives committee is using its subpoena power to require current and former baseball players to testify about steroid use.

The Committee on Government Reform began issuing the subpoenas Wednesday for its March 17 hearing on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Players being summoned are Sammy Sosa, Jose Canseco, Jason Giambi, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Frank Thomas and pitcher Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox.

The panel intends to disclose the names of players who had agreed to come voluntarily and for whom the subpoena is now just a formality.

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and Donald Fehr, head of the MLB Players Association, also are expected to testify.
