PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Pitcher Pedro Martinez, who often reported to training late with the Boston Red Sox, showed up nine days early with his new employer -- the New York Mets.

Martinez arrived at the Mets spring training camp at Port Lucie, Fla., Tuesday.

Newsday reported Martinez had a 4 1/2-hour workout, throwing with new bullpen coach Guy Conti.

The 33-year-old right-hander signed a four-year, $53 million deal with the Mets in December.

Martinez has won the Cy Young Award three times in a 13-year his career with Los Angeles, Montreal and Boston. He was 16-9 with a 3.90 ERA for the Red Sox last season.

"The new Mets are going to (have) a new attitude," Martinez said. "It's going to be a team that went from last place in other years to being a team that's really going to compete and be in the middle of the race."
