NHL reportedly has new offer for players

NEW YORK, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- The NHL reportedly may be ready to make another offer to its players in an effort to end a lengthy lockout.

The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that the NHL is set to make a formal proposal to the Players' Association. The proposal is expected to include some sort of salary cap.

The players union has ben unwilling to include any type of ceiling on players' salaries.

The NHL and NHLPA met over two days in each of the last two weeks. Last week's talks, which ended Thursday in New York, were more secretive than the previous ones.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Bob Goodenow were not at those meetings.

The NHL lockout reached Day 139 Tuesday.
