Among other seeded winners in women's matches were Alicia Molik, Karolina Sprem, Francesca Schiavone and Nathalie Dechy.

Winners on the men's side were No. 2 Andy Roddick and sixth-seeded Guillermo Coria, as well as Guillermo Canas, Sebastien Grosjean, Mikhail Youzhny and Andrei Pavel.

Roddick, 22, a semifinalist at Melbourne in 2003 and a former world No. 1, is looking to win his second career Grand Slam title, and Coria, 23, is trying to bounce back from last year's first-round loss to Cyril Saulnier.

He did make the third round in 2003.
