NBA: Memphis 101, Detroit 79

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Bonzi Wells scored points and keyed a surge at the start of the third period Thursday night as Memphis overwhelmed Detroit, 101-79.

Memphis won its fifth straight and its eighth out of 10. Shane Battier and Pau Gasol both had 12 points.

Detroit was led by Richard Hamilton with 14 points, all of them coming from the free throw line.

The Pistons cut a 16-point deficit to nine at halftime, but Memphis began the third period with a 15-3 run. The Grizzlies expanded their advantage to 26 going into the final period.

Memphis won on Detroit's home floor for the first time in seven years.
