Both sides reject hockey proposals

TORONTO, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Both sides rejected projected proposals in the NHL labor talks Tuesday.

The talks lasted about 3 1/2 hours with the league making a one-hour presentation on its counter-proposal, which included a salary cap. The NHL Players' Association then held a 2 1/2 hour meeting before ending the meeting.

The NHL rejected the NHLPA's proposal, which featured an immediate 24 percent rollback of player salaries, an increase from the 10 percent that was rejected in September.

The union's proposal did not feature a salary cap, or the assurance of "cost certainty" that is being sought by the league.

"The unanimous conclusion was the union's proposal does not work," said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

The union rejected the league's counter-proposal which calls for economic stability the league insists is needed for the long-term success of the game.

There are no future talks planned at this time to end the NHL lockout.
