Lehman named Ryder Cup captain

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The PGA of America announced Wednesday that Tom Lehman would captain the United States Ryder Cup team in 2006.

After a one-sided lost to Europe in this year's matches, the United States will attempt to regain the cup in September of 2006 at the K Club in Ireland.

"Sometimes you never dream big enough," Lehman said. "Being the Ryder Cup captain is beyond my wildest dreams."

Lehman posted a 5-3-2 record while playing in three Ryder Cup matches. He defeated Lee Westwood in the opening singles match at the 1999 Ryder Cup, when the United States staged the biggest comeback in the competition's history.

"The Ryder Cup, to me, is the ultimate golf experience," he said. "My greatest moment in golf was being a part of the Ryder Cup team."

Lehman, 45, has not won on the PGA Tour since 2000, but he either led or shared the lead in his last three tournaments this year.
