SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Ted Purdy equaled the course record with a 9-under 61 Thursday to move three shots in front after one round of the Texas Open.

Tim Clark, J.J. Henry, Jim McGovern and Dean Wilson shared second at 64 while six players, including two-time champion Justin Leonard, were at 65.

Purdy has been a runner-up on the tour twice this year.

"I hit the ball better today than I have maybe ever in my life," Purdy said.
