TROY, Ala., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Jason Samples threw and caught a touchdown pass Thursday night as Troy State shocked No. 19 Missouri, 24-14.
The Trojans (2-0) hosted a team from a major conference for the first time in school history.
Missouri's Brad Smith completed 25 of 46 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown, but the Tigers let an early 14-0 lead slip away. Missouri outgained the Trojans, 334 yards to 237.
Troy State scored two quick touchdowns in the second quarter to get back in the game.
Samples, a wide receiver, caught a backward pass and then threw 27 yards for a touchdown to Jermaine Richardson.
After Troy State regained the ball, running back Joel Whingthter broke through the line for a big gain, but as he was being tackled he fumbled directly into the arms of teammate Junior Louissaint.
Louissaint, a 275-pound offensive lineman, ran the final 35 yards for the touchdown to tie the game.
