ST. LOUIS, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Larry Walker and Scott Rolen each hit first-inning home runs Wednesday night, starting St. Louis on its way to a 4-2 win over San Diego.
Albert Pujols also homered for the Cardinals, who have won five in a row. They have twice as many victories as losses this season.

Chris Carpenter (14-5) worked seven innings, giving up a run on six hits.
San Diego fell 1 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League wild card race.
Walker hit a solo homer off San Diego starter Adam Eaton and Rolen added a two-run shot later in the first for a 3-0 lead.
