Thursday's Olympic Highlights

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Thursday's highlights at the Olympics:

-- The United States swept the gymnastics all-around gold medals when Carly Patterson came from behind to win the women's title. Paul Hamm became the first American male to win the all-around Wednesday night.

-- Aaron Piersol was disqualified after winning the 200-meter backstroke, then reinstated. He joined Michael Phelps and Amanda Beard with gold medals for Team USA. Phelps has won six medals overall, four of them gold.

-- The American basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to down Australia, 89-79, all but clinching a quarterfinal berth.

-- A sixth straight shutout for the United States softball team gave the Americans a 38-0 advantage over their Olympic opponents.

-- With 86 gold medals having been awarded, the United States and China have 14 each. The Americans have won 35 medals overall to 29 for the Chinese.

Israel, Kazakhstan and Trinidad-Tobago won their first medals of the Olympics. Belarus captured its first gold, that coming in judo.

-- Eighteen world and Olympic records were broken during the day in weightlifting. Liu Chunhong of China broke a record with each of her five lifts in winning the 69-kilogram gold.
