Hewitt, a former world No. 1, won his first Grand Slam title in New York in 2001, and decided to skip the ongoing Olympics to prepare for the upcoming U.S. Open.

It took four sets for American Ginepri to moved into the second round with a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 win over Spain's Alex Corretja.

Third-seeded Sjeng Schalken of Holland was forced to retire against Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. Muller was up 6-1, 0-1 before Schalken, the 2001 Legg Mason runner-up, called it quits due to fatigue.
