MLB: New York Yankees 4, Texas 2

ARLINGTON, Texas, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Tanyon Sturtze worked out of a first-inning jam Wednesday night and teamed with three pitchers to carry the New York Yankees past Texas, 4-2.

Sturtze (4-2) was filling in for Javier Vazquez, who is sidelined with pink eye, and allowed just two runs on five hits plus a walk. The righthander retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced after a shaky first inning.

Texas scored two runs in the first and had the bases loaded with one out. But Brian Jordan flew out to center and Gary Sheffield threw out Hank Blalock at home for a double play.

The Rangers did not score again and Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his major-league best 39th save.

Derek Jeter homered for the Yankees in the first.
